How does a contractor rank on Google Maps? What Google says, plus real ranking data

By Jacob Ritter, Forge Systems · Updated

    Short answer

Google ranks the map results by three things: relevance, distance, and prominence. A contractor can't change distance, so you win on the other two: the right Google Business Profile category and services, a website page for each service and town, and a steady flow of reviews. In September 2026, a masonry company we manage held #1 for tuckpointing on the Google map, in the top 3 at 91.4% of points across its service area.

What decides who shows up in the Google map results?

Google spells it out on its Business Profile help page. Local results are based mainly on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher), and prominence (how well-known your business is). On prominence, Google says it's based on information like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and that "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."

What can a contractor actually control?

    • Relevance: pick the right primary category (for example, Masonry Contractor or Roofing Contractor), add the services you want more of, and list the towns you serve.
    • Relevance: build a page on your website for each main service and each town, and link your Google profile to the right one.
    • Prominence: get reviews after every job, and respond to them.
    • Prominence: get listed in the directories and local organizations Google trusts, like your chamber of commerce, with the same name, city, and phone everywhere.
    • Distance: you can't change it, so don't fight it. Spend the effort on the other two.

What does a real contractor's map ranking look like?

We scan Chavez Tuckpointing's rankings on an 81-point grid across its service area in Northwest Indiana. Each point is a spot on the map, and we record where they show up for a search from that spot.

Chavez Tuckpointing Google map rankings, September 3 and 29, 2026 (81-point grid)
SearchAvg position Sep 3Avg position Sep 29In top 3 (Sep 29)
    tuckpointing near me1.741.7291.4%
    brick repair near me5.385.1060.5%
    masonry contractor near me7.027.1240.7%
    chimney repair5.966.2711.1%
    chimney repair near me6.997.414.9%

Two lessons. First, rankings differ by service. The same company can own one search and be invisible for another, which is why every service you want more of needs its own page and its own place on your Google profile. Second, they move. Chimney repair slipped during September, which tells us where to put the next month's work.

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Usually months, not weeks, and it depends on how many competitors are near you and how many reviews they have. That's why most contractors run Google Ads or Local Services Ads while their map rankings build. The ads bring calls now, and the map rankings bring free calls later.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the Google Maps ranking factors?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence. Prominence includes how many reviews you have and how many websites link to you.

Do Google reviews help you rank on Google Maps?

Yes. Google's own help page says more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking.

Why does my business rank for one service but not another?

Google matches each search to the services and pages it can see. If you have a strong page and profile signals for one service but not another, you'll rank unevenly. Build a page for each service you want, and add it to your Google Business Profile.

What is a Google Maps grid scan?

A grid scan checks your ranking for a search from many points across your service area, like an 81-point grid, so you can see where you show up and where you don't, instead of trusting one search from your own office.
